Entrevista a Maraton
Os Maraton são uma banda de rock progressivo da Noruega. Estiveram em Portugal no início do ano com duas datas (Porto e Lisboa) que estiveram recheadas de fãs que conheciam bem os seus temas.
O guitarrista e fundador Simen falou-nos um pouco sobre a banda,
1. Who are Maraton and how did the band got together?
Maraton consists of drummer Frank Røe, keyboard player Magnus Johansen, singer Fredrik Klemp, and guitarist Simen Ruud. The band was formed after Simen put an ad online looking for musicians who wanted to join his "solo project" during the summer of 2010. He got in touch with Frank and the whole thing grew into a real band soon after, with Fredrik joining on vocals in 2011. There's been a few lineup changes over the years (we could write a book about all the different singers and drummers we have auditioned), but we're very happy with having three of the four original members still in the band. Magnus has also brought a whole new dimension to the band's sound live over the years, as well as the excellent Ruben Aksnes on bass for this tour. We believe this is the best that Maraton has ever been.
Fun fact: When we first started out, Maraton took over the practice room of Eurovision Song Contest winner Alexander Rybak. The practice room was decorated with pictures of himself, which was pretty weird. He also left behind all his merch in a storage room. If anyone wants 50 DVD copies of "Alexander Rybak: The Movie", you know who to call.
1. Quem são os Maraton e como é que a banda se formou?
Maraton é composta pelo baterista Frank Røe, teclista Magnus Johansen, cantor Fredrik Klemp e guitarrista Simen Ruud. A banda foi formada depois de Simen ter colocado um anúncio on-line à procura de músicos para se juntar ao seu "projeto solo" durante o verão de 2010. Ele entrou em contato com Frank e tudo se transformou numa banda de verdade logo depois, com Fredrik participando. vocais em 2011. Houveram algumas mudanças de formação ao longo dos anos (poderíamos escrever um livro sobre todos os diferentes cantores e bateristas que testamos), mas estamos muito felizes por ter três dos quatro membros originais ainda na banda. Magnus também trouxe uma nova dimensão ao som da banda ao longo dos anos, bem como o excelente Ruben Aksnes no baixo para esta turnê. Acreditamos que este é o melhor que Maraton já foi.
Curiosidade: Quando começamos, Maraton assumiu a sala de prática do vencedor do Eurovision Song Contest Alexander Rybak. A sala de prática estava decorada com fotos de si mesmo, o que era bastante estranho. Ele também deixou para trás todo o seu merchandise numa sala de arrumação. 2. You name Leprous as One of your main influences, and you just finished a tour with them. What did that meant to you? How was the experience?
Musically, Leprous has never been an influence on Maraton. Our songwriter Simen had never even heard their music before going on tour with them. However, Leprous turned out to be a big inspiration on the road. Watching these guys perform flawlessly and with so much energy and professionalism every night has been incredible. Einar from Leprous is also a fantastic songwriter who knows how to write music that works in a live environment. We've learned a lot from them and we're super thankful for getting the chance to support them on this tour! I think it's safe to say that everyone in Maraton is a big Leprous fan now.
Fun fact: We actually approached Baard Kolstad to join Maraton a few years ago when Frank took a break from the band, but he declined and joined Leprous instead! This was way before we knew him personally and there's was no hard feelings. Small world!
2. Vocês nomeiam Leprous como uma das vossas principais influências e acabam de terminar uma tour com eles. O que isso significa para vocês? Como foi a experiência?
Musicalmente, Leprous nunca influenciou Maraton. O nosso compositor Simen nunca tinha ouvido a música deles antes de sair em tour com eles. No entanto, Leprous acabou por ser uma grande inspiração na estrada. Vê-los apresentarem-se perfeitamente e com tanta energia e profissionalismo todas as noites tem sido incrível. Einar de Leprous também é um compositor fantástico que sabe escrever músicas que funcionam em num ambiente ao vivo. Nós aprendemos muito com eles e estamos super agradecidos por ter a chance de apoiá-los nesta tour! Eu acho que é seguro dizer que toda a gente em Maraton é grande fã de Leprous agora.
Curiosidade: na verdade, nós aproximamos nos de Baard Kolstad para se juntar a Maraton há alguns anos atrás, quando o Frank deu um tempo na banda, mas ele recusou e juntou-se a Leprous! Isso foi muito antes de o conhecermos pessoalmente e não havia ressentimentos. Mundo pequeno!
3. That tour brought you to Portugal. How were the shows here?
Both shows in Portugal were some of the best shows we did on tour. We have been very lucky to get the chance to play for so many open minded and cool people, but both Porto and Lisbon were especially great. We also managed to do some sightseeing before both shows and we have to say we're a little envious of you guys who get to live in such beautiful cities! We can't wait to come back!
Fun fact: Simen was sick during both shows and we were almost certain he had the Corona virus at the time. Thankfully it turned out to be just the normal flu.
3. Essa tour trouxe-vos para Portugal. Como foram os concertos aqui?
Ambos os concertos em Portugal foram alguns dos melhores que fizemos em tour. Tivemos muita sorte em ter a chance de tocar para tantas pessoas de mente aberta, mas o Porto e Lisboa foram especialmente ótimos. Também conseguimos fazer alguns passeios turísticos antes e temos que dizer que sentimos um pouco de inveja de vocês que moram em cidades tão bonitas! Mal podemos esperar para voltar!
Curiosidade: Simen estava doente durante os dois concertos e estávamos quase certos de que ele tinha o Corona vírus na época. Felizmente, acabou por ser apenas gripe normal.
4. So, in case you didn't mentioned it in the last question, a video made in Porto caught little misfortune of your singer Fredrik. That video got super viral. Did that had any impact on the band?
It's hard to say yet, but if anything we're a bit more famous in Portugal! Pain and humiliation aside, that video was a lot of fun and we even played it on a loop during the opening parts of our show in Lisbon. The crowd seemed to like it as well. Fredrik took the fall like a champ and he totally owned being the super-star of the whole meme thing without any shame. As far as impact goes, Maraton has a fantastic fan-group called "Spectral Friends" who basically act as our internet street crew. We definitely noticed a growth in activity there as well after the video. If it turns out that this video is our biggest cultural contribution to Portugal, then we can live with that!
Fun fact: The video has been viewed over 100 million times! There's also a fantastic fan version of that video out somewhere edited to sync up with our song Altered State!
4. Então, caso não tenha sido mencionado na última pergunta, um vídeo feito no Porto pegou no pequeno infortúnio do seu cantor Fredrik. Esse vídeo ficou super viral. Isso teve algum impacto na banda?
Ainda é difícil dizer, mas no mínimo somos um pouco mais famosos em Portugal! Dor e humilhação à parte, esse vídeo foi muito divertido e até tocamos em loop durante as partes de abertura do nosso show em Lisboa. A multidão parecia gostar também. Fredrik levou a queda como um campeão e tornou-se totalmente a super-estrela do meme sem nenhuma vergonha. Quanto ao impacto, Maraton tem um fantástico grupo de fãs chamado "Spectral Friends", que basicamente atuam como nossa equipe de rua na Internet. Definitivamente, notamos um crescimento na atividade lá também após o vídeo. Se este vídeo for a nossa maior contribuição cultural para Portugal, podemos conviver com isso!
Curiosidade: o vídeo foi visto mais de 100 milhões de vezes! Há também uma versão fantástica para os fãs desse vídeo em algum lugar editado para sincronizar com a nossa música Altered State!
5. Can we say we are witnessing a new wave of prog? Do you guys feel to be part of it?
There certainly seems like it. We don't really identify with the whole "prog" scene for reasons that are too long-winded to get into here, but we feel like we're part of a bigger movement especially in Scandinavian/Nordic music. We sort of ripped off the whole "New Nordic Cuisine" thing and started branding ourselves "New Nordic Progressive Music". Culturally, we've reached a point now where music is so big and accessible that any genre can have a life of its own, even though it might not reach mainstream popularity. Even niche music can be sustainable because it's so easy to discover new music and connect to new communities with all this cool technology. Maraton is constantly flirting with pop, rock and metal at the same time and people are starting to accept that you can have things that aren't strictly X or Y. At the same time you have bands like Leprous who are also taking a bold step into pop music, while still sounding uniquely like Leprous. Our goal is to make music that makes us feel something. That's it.
If that's a 3 minute pop song or a 10 minute progressive monster, then both are totally valid for us. It will always sound like Maraton. META was written when we were a lot younger, and to some extent we felt we had something to prove with playing fast and complicated music. We're a lot more confident now as we're moving into the next evolution of the band. Our hope is that the future is less about genres and labels, and more about the music itself.
Fun fact: META was originally a much more "proggy" album, but we edited out a lot of the more complex instrumental parts right before mixing. It made the album go from "good" to "great" for us. For the listener, Fredrik is the emotional core that ties everything together. Having the album focused around his fantastic vocals were the key to making it work. It's all about finding the right balance.
5. Podemos dizer que estamos a testemunhar uma nova onda de prog? Vocês sentem-se parte disso?
Certamente parece que sim. Nós realmente não nos identificamos com toda a cena "prog" por razões que são muito longas para falar aqui, mas sentimos que somos parte de um movimento maior, especialmente na música escandinava / nórdica. Nós meio que arrancamos toda a coisa "New Nordic Cuisine" e começamos a chamar nos de "New Nordic Progressive Music". Culturalmente, chegamos a um ponto em que a música é tão grande e acessível que qualquer gênero pode ter uma vida própria, mesmo que não atinja a popularidade principal. Até músicas de nicho podem ser sustentáveis, porque é muito fácil descobrir novas músicas e conectar-se a novas comunidades com toda essa tecnologia bacana. Maraton está constantemente flirtando com pop, rock e metal ao mesmo tempo e as pessoas estão começando a aceitar que podem haver coisas que não são estritamente X ou Y. Ao mesmo tempo, existem bandas como Leprous que também estão a dar um passo ousado na música pop, ainda soando como Leprous. Nosso objetivo é fazer música que nos faça sentir alguma coisa.
Se é uma música pop de 3 minutos ou um monstro progressivo de 10 minutos, ambas são totalmente válidas para nós. Sempre soa a Maraton. META foi escrito quando éramos muito mais jovens e, até certo ponto, sentimos que tínhamos algo a provar ao tocar músicas rápidas e complicadas. Estamos muito mais confiantes agora, enquanto nos movemos para a próxima evolução da banda. A nossa esperança é que o futuro seja menos sobre gêneros e mais sobre a música em si.
Curiosidade: META era originalmente um álbum muito mais "proggy", mas editamos muitas das partes instrumentais mais complexas antes da mixagem. Isso fez o álbum passar de "bom" para "ótimo" para nós. Para o ouvinte, Fredrik é o núcleo emocional que une tudo. Ter o álbum focado em seus vocais fantásticos foi a chave para fazê-lo funcionar. É tudo sobre encontrar o equilíbrio certo.
6. "Fringe Logic" and "Almost Human" were released after the album "Meta" came out. Will these two songs belong to the Next album? How is the recording process going on?
We recorded pretty much all the songs we had written for Meta, but not all of them made it to the album for various reasons. After Meta was released, we revisited "Almost Human" and "Fringe Logic" with re-recordings, new mixes and a bunch of other changes and felt the songs were finally ready to be heard by fans. They are absolutely a part of the Meta experience and should be considered as the final pieces of the puzzle for that album. It feels really good to get those tracks out, especially Fringe Logic as that song dates back to 2008! Now we're setting our sights on the future with our second album, which we have just started writing. Right now we're in that scary-yet-fun early phase where anything and everything can happen and nothing is locked down. The album can become basically anything and that's very exciting for us. Writing an album in the middle of quarantine is a very interesting experience, as we can't really meet and work on stuff together. We're adjusting to the new situation and are all busy working from home with new stuff. Hopefully it won't delay the process too much!
Fun fact: We recently had a listening session on Zoom video chat where Simen presented his demos/song sketches for the new album to the band with everyone listening and sharing their feedback. It's a strange but surprisingly effective way of working.
6. "Fringe Logic" e "Almost Human" foram lançados após o lançamento do álbum "META". Essas duas músicas pertencerão ao próximo álbum? Como está o processo de gravação?
Gravamos praticamente todas as músicas que escrevemos para o Meta, mas nem todas chegaram ao álbum por várias razões. Após o lançamento do Meta, revisitamos "Almost Human" e "Fringe Logic" com regravações, novas mixagens e várias outras mudanças e sentimos que as músicas estavam finalmente prontas para serem ouvidas pelos fãs. Eles são absolutamente parte da experiência do Meta e devem ser considerados as peças finais do quebra-cabeça desse álbum. É muito bom divulgar essas faixas, especialmente o Fringe Logic, pois essa música remonta a 2008! Agora estamos de olho no futuro com o nosso segundo álbum, que acabamos de começar a escrever. No momento, estamos nessa fase inicial assustadora, mas divertida, onde tudo e qualquer coisa podem acontecer e nada está bloqueado. O álbum pode se tornar basicamente qualquer coisa e isso é muito emocionante para nós. Escrever um álbum no meio da quarentena é uma experiência muito interessante, pois não podemos realmente encontrar e trabalhar juntos. Estamos nos adaptando à nova situação e estamos todos ocupados trabalhando em casa com coisas novas. Espero que isso não atrase muito o processo!
Curiosidade: Recentemente, tivemos uma sessão de escuta no bate-papo por vídeo Zoom, onde Simen apresentou seus demos / esboços de músicas para o novo álbum à banda, com todos ouvindo e compartilhando seus comentários. É uma maneira estranha, mas surpreendentemente eficaz de trabalhar.
7. What message you guys look to pass through your music?
We're not really a political band, nor do we live by any dogma or code that we want to communicate through our music. All we hope is that people enjoy it and connect to it. If they get something bigger out of it, then that's awesome. Obviously our lyrics aren't totally abstract. Every song has an intended meaning and something to say, but that might not be obvious to every listener and we accept that. So yeah, at the end of the day it's really up to the listener, no matter what we do or say. We don't want to take anything away from you, nor do we expect anything from you as a listener. You do you!
Fun fact: In the early days we had matching costumes which we made ourselves for live shows. This was before Frank famously started playing in shorts. Pictures exist and they are just as terrible as you can imagine.
7. Que mensagem pretendem passar através da vossa música?
Na verdade, não somos uma banda política, nem vivemos de acordo com nenhum dogma ou código que queremos comunicar através da nossa música. Tudo o que esperamos é que as pessoas gostem e se conectem a ela. Se eles obtiverem algo maior com isso, então isso é incrível. Obviamente, nossas letras não são totalmente abstratas. Toda a música tem um significado pretendido e algo a dizer, mas isso pode não ser óbvio para todos os ouvintes e nós aceitamos isso. Então, sim, no final das contas, depende muito do ouvinte, não importa o que façamos ou digamos. Não queremos tirar nada a ninguém, nem esperamos nada de ninguém como ouvinte.
Curiosidade: Nos primeiros dias, tínhamos roupas combinadas que fizemos para concertos ao vivo. Isso foi antes de Frank começar a tocar em calções. As imagens existem e são tão terríveis quanto se pode imaginar.
