Entrevista a Wake The Dead
Os Wake the Dead são uma banda francesa de hardcore, com um percurso bem recheado. Encontramos quatro álbuns “The Things We Can’t Forget” (2011), “Meaningless Expectations” (2012), “Under The Mask” (2016) e “Still Burning” (2020) e vários concertos na Europa.
Recentemente estiveram em Portugal com três datas marcada, tendo uma sido cancelada por causa da pandemia. Quisemos saber mais sobre este coletivo de Marselha e aqui está o resultado desta nossa “conversa”.
1. Who are Wake The Dead and how did you got together?
Wake The dead is a ten years old band. We've played more than 340 shows in a decade all around the world. It's a bunch of long time friends with the same passion for hardcore, punk and music in general. We are a 5 piece band and our actual line-up since 2018 is composed of Vincent (singer), Léo (drummer), Yvan (bass player), Guillaume and Nicolas (guitar players).
Our Guitarists Guillaume and Nicolas and also our bass player Yvan are here since the beginning of the band, they created it with Jeff the original singer and Fabien the original drummer. They all were in the same scene, setting up shows and playing in different bands and decided to start this project eager to do a modern hardcore band, with the goal to play as much as possible. And that's what they did until today, to be continued...
1. Quem são os Wake The Dead e como é que se formaram?
Wake The Dead é uma banda com dez anos. Nós tocámos mais de 340 concertos numa década, por todo o mundo. Somos amigos de longa data com a mesma paixão pelo hardcore, punk e musica em geral. Somos uma banda de 5 membros e o nosso line-up desde de 2018 é composto pelo Vincent (vocalista), Léo (baterista), Yvan (baixista) Guillaume e Nicolas (guitarristas).
Os nossos guitarristas, Guillaume e Nicolas, e tambem o nosso baixista Yvam estão presentes desde o início da banda, eles criaram na com o Jeff (vocalista original) e com o Fabien (baterista original). Eles pertenciam todos à mesma scene, a fazer concertos e tocar em bandas diferentes até decidirem começar este projeto com o objetivo de formar uma banda de hardcore moderno e tocar o máximo possível. E é isso que fazem até hoje, para ser continuado...
2. What drives your music?
Passion. It's always passion and DIY state of mind that still makes us play everywhere we can, as our motto "Driving for hours, playing half an hour" that we tattooed last year. More over this allows us to meet people with the same passion, defending the same values and same vision of music, sharing all this.
2. O que move a vossa musica?
Paixão. É sempre paixão e a mentalidade DIY que nos faz tocar onde podemos, tal como o nosso lema "Conduzir por horas para tocar meia hora" que tatuamos o ano passado. Isto permite nos conhecer pessoas com a mesma paixão que a nossa, que defendem os mesmos valores e a mesma visão musical, partilhar tudo isto.
3. How would you describe the hardcore scene in your town and in your country?
The hardcore scene is not an easy scene, specially in France, where people are more into metal stuff or other kinds of music. Years after years, a lot of venues/places closed their doors and it's sometimes difficult to make extreme music. But it still remains people to set shows and helps us in many ways, for food, sleep and also distribution of our music everywhere we go. Through difficulties, hardcore is always a huge family!
In our hometown Marseille we have a bunch of people connected that are doing DIY music and keeping it alive for 20 years, and it's not the end. We have too talented bands such as Landmvrks, DirtyWheels, CheatxDeath, Nebraska and had some in the past few years like Downhill, Apache, Odyssey, WalkAway, etc... and venues involved too like Le Molotov, La Salle Gueule, thanks to those people we can say that hardcore lives!!!
3. Como descreveriam a scene hardcore na vossa cidade e no vosso pais?
A scene hardcore não é uma scene fácil, especialmente na França, onde as são pessoas ligadas ao metal ou a outros tipos de musica. Anos após anos, muitos recintos fecharam as portas e torna-se complicado por vezes fazer musica extrema. Mas ainda restam pessoas que organizam espétaculos e nos ajudam de diversas formas tais como com comida, sitio para dormir e a distribuição da nossa musica. Mesmo entre dificuldades, o hardcore é sempre uma grande familia!
Na nossa terra natal, Marselha temos um monte de pessoas conectadas que fazem musica DIY e mantêm na viva por 20 anos, e isso não é o fim. Temos também bandas talentosas como Landmvrks, DirtyWheels, CheatxDeath, Nebraska e tivemos há alguns anos atrás bandas como Downhill, Apache, Odyssey, WalkAway, etc... e recintos envolvidos como Le Molotov, La Salle Gueule, graças a essas pessoas podemos dizer que o hardcore vive!!
4. You traveled a lot, and played over 340+ shows. How would you describe the state of the hardcore scene globally?
Through the past years we had the chance, thanks to all our work and the help of many local promoters and bookers, to tour in all Europe, Asia (Japan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapor and Indonesia) and Cuba. We could say that hardcore lives all around the world and sometimes where you cannot expect it. We had crazy experiences and crazy shows, warming our hearts. Hardcore scene is a big familly, made of people with the faith that all together we can make the things change.
4. Vocês viagaram bastante, e tocaram mais de 340 concertos. Como descreveriam a scene harcore global?
Ao longo dos anos nós tivemos a chance, graças a todo o nosso trabalho e à ajuda de alguns promotores locais, de fazer uma tour em toda a Europa, Ásia (Japão, China, Malásia, Tailândia, Signapura e Indónesia) e Cuba. Nós podemos dizer que o hardcore vive por todo o mundo e ás vezes em sítios que não esperamos. Já tivemos algumas experiências malucas que nos aquecem o coração. A scene hardcore é uma grande família, composta por pessoas com a fé de que juntos podemos fazer tudo melhor.
5. It’s been 10 years since the band started, what diferences have you felt from then until now?
In ten years we are not sure, big changes happened, people are growing older, some new people are joining the scene, setting up shows, or just showing up. On our side we have surely a different view of what we like, how we want our music to be and how it should sound.
We hope that in 10 more years we will still rock everywhere with all the people that we can say became friends.
5. Fazem dez anos que a banda começou, que diferenças sentiram desde então até agora?
Em dez anos, não temos a certeza, grandes mudanças aconteceram, as pessoas estão a envelhecer, algumas pessoas novas estão a juntar-se à scene, organizar concertos ou apenas a aparecer. Do nosso lado, temos certamente uma visão diferente do que gostamos, como queremos que nossa música seja e como deve soar.
Esperamos que, daqui a 10 anos, continuemos a agitar tudo com todas as pessoas que podemos dizer que se tornaram amigas.
6. What message do you want to pass through your music?
Keep it positive. Keep on fighting, against every struggles you can face in your life. In the end, you are not alone. You always find someone or friends who help you, support you, or just give you some time for a good moment. Stay who you are.
6. Que mensagem desejam transmitir através da vossa música?
Mantenham o positivismo. Continuem a lutar contra todas as lutas que enfrentem na vida. No final, não estão sozinhos. Há sempre alguém ou alguns amigos que nos ajudam e apoiam. Permaneçam quem são.
7. Your lattest tour was abruptly interrupted by the covid-19 pandemic. Can you tell us about those days? How you felt, how you solved the situation and what it meant for you?
For sure, it was a special event we had to deal with. It was new. We never postponed shows or tours in emergency for these kinds of situations. We did the best we could to find other venues/places to play shows but in regards of the crisis growing days after days, at the last minute we had no other choice than driving back home. Our last 2 shows of the tour in Loule and Madrid were cancelled. Due to Covid 19, city closed venues or promoters decided to cancel shows for safety.
We were sad and disappointed, the tour was so good so far and not being able to finish the job, play in front of people who probably were waiting for us is really frustrating. Even if we know and understand the situation, it's always hard, particularly for a band like us to cancel shows. In Wake The Dead, we try to do everything by ourselves: touring, all the booking stuff, recording, the distribution and much more. We are not in a big label, we don't have a tour manager or a crew. So, when you have to cancel shows, you have to deal with every aspect all by yourself: financial loss, merch, try to reschedule postponed shows, and try to go back home safe. Now everyone is on his own house, but be sure we are working hard as ever, we will be back to play awesome shows and share moments all together
7. A vossa ultima tour foi abruptamente interrompida pela pandemia do covid-19. Podem nos falar sobre esses dias? Como se sentiram, como resolveram a situação e o que isso significou para vocês?
Sem dúvida, foi algo diferente com que tivemos de lidar. Nós nunca adiámos nenhum concerto ou tour em emergência por este tipo de situações . Fizemos o melhor que que conseguimos para encontrar outros recintos onde tocar mas tendo a crise crescido como cresceu tivemos de voltar para casa ao último minuto. Os nossos 2 ultimos concertos da tour em Loulé e Madrid foram cancelados.
Ficámos tristes e desapontados, a tour estava a ser muito boa e não termos a possibilidade de acabar o trabalho, tocar para pessoas que provavelmente estavam à nossa espera foi realmente frustrante. Mesmo que percebamos a situação, é sempre difícil cancelar concertos, especialmente para uma banda como a nossa. Em Wake The Dead, tentamos fazer tudo nós: tours, gravações, distribuição e muito mais. Não estamos em nenhuma grande label, e não temos um manager nem crew, Por isso, quando cancelamos concertos temos de tratar de todos os aspetos nós mesmo. Agora estamos cada um em sua casa, mas com certeza a trabalhar arduamente para voltar a tocar concertos incríveis e partilharmos esses momentos juntos.
8. What are your future plans?
For sure touring after this period of confinement, we have some fests planned for summer, fingers crossed that they will happen, and then we are now booking half part of the year.
On the other hand we will continue to defend our last album "Still Burning" (streaming link: https://wakethedead.fanlink.to/sb) that was released March 2nd. 2 videoclips were released for it, the song "Back for More" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16eP3VQtvJ4) and the song "All My Flames" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5tSVWhzPUU).

8. Quais são os vossos planos para o futuro?
Certamente, uma tour após este período de confinamento, temos alguns festivais planeados para o verão, dedos cruzados para que isso aconteça, e agora estamos a reservar metade do ano.
Por outro lado, continuamo a defender nosso último álbum "Still Burning" (link para streaming: https://wakethedead.fanlink.to/sb) lançado em 2 de março.
